Diddy Dirty Money's "Last Train to Paris"

After an oh so long list of unsuccessful projects like Danity Kane and Day 26, Diddy attempts to revive the music with himself as the forefront.... and mission accomplished. He along with Dawn and Kalenna have taken us on a ride of rollercoaster relationships, dope sounds, "Diddyfied" hooks and layered vocals featuring star-studded artists from Diddy's rolodex such as Chris Brown, Usher, Lil Wayne, Justin Timberlake, Grace Jones, Wiz Khalifa, T.I. and more! Although produced by many different producers, like Polo Da Don and Swizz Beatz the album still manages to have a very cohesive sound, sealed with the ongoing theme of love/hate relationships, sex and romance.

The album begins with a deep electronic intro with deep vibes and Diddy's reverbed voice establishing that "Love is a motherF****." The second track, "Yeah Yeah Yeah You Would" featuring Grace Jones, introduces the album's high intensity with escalating synth sounds and harmonic layers. The next track, piano pounded, "I Hate That You Love Me," continues the dysfunctional relationship theme. "A** On the Floor" featuring Swizz Beatz contributes a marching band sound, very upbeat and verses that are slower over the beat, making you forget how fast the song actually is. (very smart) "Looking for Love" featuring Usher, has a hard beat and a smooth hook, boasting vocally correct. A sampled track, "Someone to Love Me" featuring only Diddy is what would be called a go between track, where the general theme stops for a moment in the middle of the album and then continues. "Hate You Know" the dopest beat I've heard in a LONG time, with a hook that begs, "Don't Go, Don't Go, Don't Go, I Hate You, I Hate You." Chris Brown slows the album down with "Yesterday," a track written by Drake, with an opening line, "Yesterday I fell in Love, Today feels like my funeral." "Shades" features a spoken word entrance from Lil Wayne, followed by features from Justin Timberlake, Bilal,  and James Fauntleroy. "Angels," a single, featuring Biggie and Rick Ross, gives the album another feel. "Your Love" featuring Trey Songz definitely makes you dance. Electro track, "Strobe Lights" featuring Lil Wayne and dark lyrics. "Hello Good Morning," another horn blasting hit single, featuring T.I. sets us back on track with a beat that makes us move. "I Know" featuring Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa and Seven of Rich Girl," a love song, brings us close to the end. "Coming Home" the latest single, featuring Skylar Grey, a painful but hopeful track releases the heart from the hurt. "Loving You No More" including a different and way better bridge then the leaked version of the single, puts the past behind us in the relationship. The deluxe edition includes "Last Night Part II," a spin off of Diddy's "Press Play" album. All in all, "Last Train to Paris" blatantly demands the attention of listeners and will get it. This is one of those rare albums that can be played all the way through from top to bottom with no skip button being pressed, but possibly only the back button. Listen to "Hate You Now" below.

Alex Winston's "Choice Notes"

Another cool, UNSIGNED girl captures my heart. Listen to a thrill ride of bass, drums, bells and high notes. Has a children's sound as well, but with dubstep. Remixed by the Tomb Crew and properly titled "Choice Notes," she lets us hear all the notes she chose to hit in the highly enchanted melody.

Bird and the Bee at SkyBar!

Last night I had the lovely privilege of seeing the cutesy duo, "Bird and the Bee" at Skybar in LA with a few of my great friends. Skybar is amazing! If you ever get the chance to go, GO! It's atmospheric and romantic, includes a pool, a real tree filled with lights with a great view of the city all under a tent. Simply radiant. :)

Bird and the Bee did a few of their classics, like "Again and Again," "Because," and "How Deep is Your Love," along with some Hall and Oates tribute tracks like, "I Can't Go for That." By the way, this duo is GREAT live. No disappointment here. To top it all off, singer Inara George, proceeded to jump in the pool following the show as a grand finale, followed by cheers of approval from the audience. All in all, it was the perfect venue, the perfect show and the perfect night. For shows at Skybar, visit ohmyrockness.com

If you've never heard them, listen to their classic, "Again and Again" below.

Natalia Kills: The Creepy Starlet

Listen to scary, but beautiful UK pop star, Natalia Kills with a sound similar to Rihanna (The Rated R version, not the Loud version); creepy key tones and layered harmonies. She quotes, "Some girls want to be a princess when they grow up, I wanted to be in a bad bitch girl gang." She's got the music to show it on her new EP "Mirrors," available now. Be afraid at nataliakills.com.

Neon Hitch Is On Fire!

New artist, Neon Hitch (which is actually her real name), recently signed to Warner Brothers, has got the voice of a sassy gypsy and the life story to back it up. In her bio, she states, "I grew up on a bus traveling the world as a street performer and trapeze artist .. .. I make my own clothes, and believe rules were made to be broken .. .. At 16 I ran away to India and lived there for a while which gave me some amazing stories to tell my grandchildren.." This girl is a true gem and wants to share her jewels with the world. As you all know, I am a huge fan of people with real talent and Neon Hitch definitely has it. She's now working on her appropriately titled mixtape, "Beg, Borrow or Steal," with producer Benny Blanco, and has worked with everyone from Imogen Heap to Mike Posner and Jason Derulo. This girl is a citizen of the world and comes hard and ready to deliver. She covers seemingly opposite tracks of her assumed sound, such as Ellie Goulding's "Starry Eyed," and Travie McCoy's "Billionaire," but manages to add her own twist and sass.  She covered Snoop's "Drop It Like It's Hot," and knocked it out of the park!! Listen below!

Florrie is one of those special artists that doesn't want or need the help of a major, blood-sucking label. She wants to make music that she loves and wants room to experiment and she's proven to be one of those special artists that we can forever preserve. Music And The Downward Spiral To The Abyss

As we all know music evolves much like anything else. But has it evolved for the better or for worse? Anyone's parents would say, "Music was so much better in my day," or "What happened to the good stuff," when they hear their children listening to a mediocre Rihanna track or Soulja Boy's "Superman." If we're being honest it is rare to find music that follows through on everything it promised. Hence, we're stuck with artists that go hard in the studio, or should I say the sound engineer working hard to make them sound good, and then they sound terrible at the concert after fans paid money to see them come through and show all the great singing ability that the album claims to have. When my dad usually compares music from his day to present, he usually brings up the great Stevie Wonder, who is a legend to say the least; a blind man with so much talent he could bust the doors off of a house. This man has an amazing talent that artists who are famous today don't stand a chance against. He also brings up the great music of Earth, Wind and Fire, which is musical ability that could never be mimicked.

Artists of low quality talent, but good looks and a gimmick are cleaning up, because our standards have been lowered. We don't expect much from artists today. But how is that someone who can't sing live can become famous overnight and never look back? Do we only care about looks and not about talent? Part of a requirement should be able to sing live shouldn't it? Even if we take someone like Beyonce who can sing live and is insanely talented but became brainwashed by the mainstream control freakism that sold so many souls. She is a perfect example of someone who could have way better music and not just this lame pop diva crap that she pumps out. Lately, everyone in the industry has been trying to fit this mold and get the certain "sound," but the truth of the matter is, not everyone needs to sound the same to sell records. Why in the world would I want to hear every artist alive on a techno pop track and stray away from why I liked them in the first place? Don't get me wrong, Usher's voice does sound great over the techno pop beat on "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love." But not everyone needs to take this road. Rap is an entirely different horror story; now thats a genre that is actually deceased. We let anyone who can talk call themselves rappers. I mean, Soulja Boy, seriously. Long gone are the days of real hip-hop, the chill vibes of jazz mixed with head-bobbing from the crowd. Long gone are the days of real R&B and Mary J's "Real Love."

Everyone is just lost in the sauce of the UK electro-sound, which I don't mind from the right people. Also, if we really think about it, anyone can make an electro track sound great; singing ability isn't nearly as important if at all. Electro is definitely my S*** right now, just because its feel good, it doesn't promise much and does its job, which is to make us dance.
I'm not disappointed in it at the concert and I'm not bummed because I don't get how they got famous. Artists like Diplo, making a living off of DJing and remixing standard joints are who I look forward to hearing. They have a talent and they come through on the promised performance.  Its about the music for them. Having fun with it and making the most of what they have. At least they're not on the stage with mediocre voices sounding completely different from their recordings, constantly disappointing fans. The way to not be disappointed is to find underground artists who are not yet smothered by the mainstream demons and being dragged into a downward spiral of unoriginality and cloning, and find those that just love to make music, the way they think it should sound, in the quality that they believe in.

Here are some artists to experiment with that I recently appreciated:
Jessie J
Gold Panda
Florrie
Florence and The Machine
The Radio Department
Dragonette

Kanye West Unveils His Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Kanye's fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," reveals a different side of the Kanye that we're all used to. Although he still establishes his beats on rare samples, he now appeals to genres of liking besides hip-hop. Heavily influenced by alternative, classical and electronic music, he opens the floor to a larger audience and a wider range. Many listeners say that his music changed after his mother passed away in November of 2007, which was quite obvious with the "808s and Heartbreaks" release a year later. His personality also changed as his cockiness was never to go unnoticed. He lost many of his supporters with the "Taylor Swift" incident, in which he was extremely rude and publicly humiliated her on stage!  As his music has become more abstract, dramatic and as some would put it, quite strange, we have a front row seat to the emotional changes in his personal life. The long time Kanye fans might not appreciate, "the fantasy," as much as the newly converted, as they might feel that he lost his classic sound that we all loved on "College Dropout, "Late Registration" and even "Graduation."

On his latest album, He takes us on a ride through his dark twisted fantasies, starting the track list off with "Dark Fantasy," which features a creepy toned, story-telling session by rapper, Nicki Minaj and a backing synchronized chorus repeating, "Can we get much higher? So High!" "Gorgeous," the second track features a hook by Kid Cudi and verses by classic MC, Raekwon and Kanye over a repetitive electric guitar followed by the smash thematic single, "Power.""All of the Lights" is preceded with a string and piano duet "Interlude", that flows into a majestic horn procession and incorporates a hook by Rihanna. "Monster," many leak listeners' favorite, lets us have a short remembrance of the pre "808s" Kanye, with verses by everyone known to man, including Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, her many animated voices, and a contrasted  breakdown by Bon Iver, an alternative band. "So Appalled" a dramatic rap track, with another slew of rappers over a hard beat, truly channels Kanye's dark side. On a lighter note, "Devil In A New Dress," using a romantic sample from Smokey Robinson's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" puts us in the mood to slow dance. Finally, we're shoved into another realm inside Kanye's twisted mind, with "Runaway," where he attempts to sing the hook himself. "Hell of a Life" puts us back on the path to the dark side,  complete with a riveting, synthed beat and multiple chorused breakdowns. A peacefully, painful portion of the fantasy is finally explored, with "Blame Game," featuring John Legend and a sample from dance pioneer and UK artist, Aphex Twin's "Avril 14." The album ends with an Imogen Heap'd, "Lost In the World" and "See Me Now" (bonus track), where he attempts to capture the spirit of her classically synthesized, "Hide and Seek." He tries to make it slightly different by incorporating a beat, but listener's still caught on to the obvious copycat gesture. Most of the songs on the album were included in his 35 minute short film, "Runaway," released a month before the album, in which the weird gets weirder, with a naked, human bird, deer, another world, and other catastrophically confusing visions. The album is ultimately a spiral of mixed feelings and resembles a strange roller coaster of emotion and one must definitely be caught in a mentally different world when listening to it all the way through. "The Fantasy" begins November 23.

Rihanna's "Loud" is Quiet...

Rihanna's new album, "Loud," out today, falls very short of fantastic with only the singles being the acceptable tracks. Aside from her signature electro tracks, "Only Girl (In the World)," Ester Dean written, "S&M" and "What's My Name," we find that we're stuck with 13 tracks of boredom and fluff music, sloppily put together and not exciting. With such a dope album like "Rated R" behind her, we were waiting with breath that was bated for "Loud" to be equally hammy, but it fell short of our high expectations...Don't get me wrong, there are some mediocre tracks that might get her by, like "Cheers (Drink to that), where she puts on her Bajan accent over an alternative beat, toasting the good times, or Nicki Minaj redeemed track, "Raining Men," but besides that, it's full of sorry excuses for slow songs and no power...smh....o well until next time.

What I'm Listenin' To Right Now!

Girl group Electrik Red's new album fully produced by "The Dream" is jam-packed with "girl's are stronger than boy's" lyrics and "Dreamified melodies..." on 14 tracks of a new sound. We haven't had a girl group to love in a minute so they've come to redeem the 4 star female alliance once again. yay!

Jessie J at Sofitel Hotel (Stone Rose Lounge)

Jessie J at Stone Rose Lounge
By: Elyse Ketura

Tuesday night at the Stone Rose Lounge in Los Angeles was jam packed with UMG execs and associates, drinking blissfully, while waiting in a standing room only, for the talented pipes of British sensation, Jessie J. Free cocktails were provided and named after her song titles in the order she sang them. The showcase was to celebrate her acceptance onto American turf and Universal Republic Recordings. Kelly Rowland was even in attendance to celebrate her friend’s American landing.

Jessie J. finally enters the stage dressed in a punked out trendy outfit, complete with a cropped tee, tight leather shorts, sky-high stiletto heels and blunt haircut. She introduced herself with the most adorable British accent and then wowed us with one of the most powerful voices we had ever heard. She began her set with “Nobody’s Perfect,” a track discussing how she talked about someone behind his or her back and it came back to haunt her via karmic circle. The chorus breathes, “And I hate that I let you down, and I feel so bad about it, I guess karma comes back around, cuz I’m the one that’s hurting…” She then changed the mood to romance and passion with silky track, “LOVE.” Her range expands wide with the melody and chorus and graces us amorously. “Price Tag” seemed to be the crowd’s favorite, as we all vibed out to the Marley-influenced rhythm. This extremely uplifting track reminded us that it’s not about the money, but music lovers “just wanna make the world dance.” She then shocked us all with the powerfully strong, bluesy, “Aguilera on steroids” track, “Momma Knows Best.” Jessie J had this enormous ability to stretch her voice beyond what seemed to be her means and channeled the likes of all the greats, Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, and Aretha Franklin. She finished the set with meaningful ballad, "Who You Are," another single, dealing with staying true to yourself always.
Her American single, “Do It Like a Dude,” which has the same concept of Ciara’s “Like A Boy,” comes in so hard, girly girls tune into their masculine side for the remainder of the track. The chorus rings, “I can do it like a brotha, do it like a dude, grab my crotch, wear my hat low like you!” The pulsating beat turns alternative rock fans into gangstas for approximately 3 minutes and 30 seconds, and possibly forever if played on repeat.

Keep an eye out for her debut album coming soon!

What I'm Listenin' To Right Now: "Letherette"

Electronic music is one of those things that you learn to love or you learn to hate...but if you love it....you love hard...

I've been following an unsigned UK artist, "Letherette," and the music is something I've missed. His style is a mix of lounge/hip-hop/electronic. I just keep expecting Q-tip to come in and go hammy on a verse. Strictly instrumental, which never happens....but see for yourself. Here are three different tracks...very different from each other...but you gotta love 'em all.

What I'm Listenin' To Right Now: Gold Panda's "Lucky Shiner"

London producer "Gold Panda," has finally blessed us with a digital LP entitled, "Lucky Shiner" through Ghostly International in the U.S. and Notown Recordings in London. Though he has had EPs and other short collaborations, this is his first full length album. The completely instrumental, 11 track set (14, if deluxe with 3 bonus tracks) opens up with, "You" and "Vanilla Minus," a sound resembling a hip, Shanghai underworld and then takes us all over the globe with instrumental electronic grooves such as "Same Dream China," a heavy bell driven whimsical track, "India Lately," and "Greek Style." He even has domestic titles like "Parents," which is a calming, guitar only track, "Snow and Taxis," and "Marriage," which has the best dopest base line I've heard in quite awhile from an electronic mix. These tracks have an energy that we don't experience everyday. His album depicts music and light synths (think of Psaap, but instrumental) as a collaboration and transcends the normal path of electronic music. He uses bells, chimes, electronic drums and electric piano and other quirky combinations throughout the whole set, that will make us bob our heads, but stay relaxed in our seats. He even has darker titles like, "I'm With You, But I'm Lonely," a solemn ode to empty relationships, incorporated with a slow intro and switching to a syncopated drum rhythm. Gold Panda is definitely more fit for the lounge crowd and not the crazy techno heads....it definitely comes highly recommended.

Something to Look Forward to In the Upcoming Months

Ciara will be back......She's working on something crazy!!!!!

Mark Ronson Bangs With Q-Tip and MNDR!

Such a dope video!

Mark Is All About International Business

Hit producer and song-creating genius, Mark Ronson is back with yet another dope collaboration with "The Business Intl," a name created to name all of the amazing people that contributed. Ronson has mastered the art of collaboration as he is well known for collaborating with pop/jazz sensation Amy Winehouse and has done it again with this new masterpiece he calls "Record Collection." This record exudes all of Mark's musical characteristics, i.e. old-school hip-hop, 50s to 60s energy, trancy pop and atmospheric featured vocalists. He comes up with dramatic drum rifts and incorporates long lost loves of our lives such as Q-Tip on the first track and single "Bang Bang Bang," and D'Angelo (in a way we've never heard him) on "Glass Mountain Trust." The album incorporates rap and pop in a combination that is overwhelmingly smart and cool. Tracks like "Somebody to Love Me," featuring Rose Elinor Dougall, Andrew Wyatt and Boy George, spring about a such a jazz/funk impression with walking electric bass, sick drum rhythm and synth. (My favorite track). The whole album is full of other surprising artists, who let go of their stereotypical sounds to create a new style. Ronson makes us feel like we're in an episode of "The Brady Bunch" or a house party that we staggered back from this morning. His tracks make us dance, smile, laugh, jump up and down or just chill. Get your hands on it Mark Ronson and The Business Intl.'s "Record Collection."

Preview the album on iTunes....Listen to "Somebody to Love Me" below.

Introducing Ellie Goulding!

UK artist, Ellie Goulding has finally been introduced to America! She has a voice like a pop angel and a dope electro-pop sound. Songs like "Starry Eyed" and "Guns and Roses" place her in a "Telepopmusik" category. Using airy, wispy synth sounds that dedicate their notes to her voice, she is one of a kind. Her 4 track EP is available now in the States!

Shontelle Shows Off

Artist Shontelle's debut album, "No Gravity," (produced mainly by Rodney Jerkins and Harry Sommerdahl) proves party ready with its club beats and catchy hooks, on tracks such as "Take Ova" featuring Pitbull and "DJ Made Me Do It" featuring white-boy rapper Asher Roth. On "DJ Made Me Do It," Asher Roth's verse sounds unsurprisingly identical to Kanye's flow on "American Boy" (the beat does too....clearly, Kanye and Estelle influenced). The album also offers medium paced ballads such as "Impossible," "Kiss You Up," and "Say Hello to Goodbye." "Love Shop" with background vocal echoes and ethereal synthesized sounds offers a "sweet girl's night out" feeling. She invites us to party with her and fall helplessly in love with her on "Helpless" in which she describes how she feels girlishly silly around a man. The album ends with "T-Shirt" featuring the LoveKing himself, The-Dream, in which she strips down and discusses real female issues when dealing with a break-up. Of course, The-Dream adds his soft layered voice to the hook and takes the song up to a new high. Shontelle is Rihanna meets Kelly Rowland meets Jessica Simpson....yes, I said it.....Jessica Simpson. She makes me feel like a girl all over again.

See for yourself.....skim on iTunes....

Drink Your Troubles Away Bruno!

New and might I add, breakthrough artist first heard accompanying B.o.B on "Nothing On You" the summer smash, is back with a new reggae track. The bright-eyed artist and his crystal clear pipes push out the pain of the day as he emerges in "Liquor Store Blues" featuring Damien Marley. His voice rises high above the music and produces an aura of eclectic relaxation.

John Legend and Roots are Majestically Political

R&B/Soul star, John Legend is back with his strong and invigorating voice, this time accompanied by long time Hip-Hop band, The Roots. The album is pure funk/soul magic, lifting us off the ground with powerful lyrics and jazz/hip-hop drumming at the hand of drummer and band director, QuestLove. The collaboration begins with the track "Hard Times," with John Legend spreading his voice over the deeply soulful melody. Next is funky tune, "Compared To What," a trippy, neo-soul sound lead by a slappy guitar and high hats, gracefully inspired by the great James Brown. The track is mostly instrumental with a sassy saxophone solo, along side John Legend belting out occasional lyrics. "Wake Up Everybody" features rising singer/songwriter, Melanie Fiona and underground Hip-Hop genius, Common. With inspiring lyrics and beautiful harmonies, Melanie somewhat sounds like a young Lauryn Hill, backed up by Common with a positive hook, inviting us to change the world. Upbeat, bluesy track "Our Generation," obviously layered with horns and tambourines is also positively powerful, challenging the listeners to have hope and change their current situations for the better. (Has the sound of the beginnings of a modern freedom movement) John Legend goes straight back to church with his soulfully raspy voice, followed by a quick verse by Black Thought. "Little Ghetto Boy (The Prelude)" is a spoken word excerpt from Chicago based poet, Malik Yusef. The poem proudly presents the story of what a child sees growing up in the ghetto. The poem moves forward into the song, "Little Ghetto Boy," sung by John Legend with a political verse from Black Thought. "Hang On In There" channels an early Temptations tune, smooth and story-telling. "Humanity (Love The Way It Should Be)", inspired by Bob Marleydom, free-spirited and carefree, promotes life and love wrapped in a lighthearted melody. "Wholy Holy", very different from the rest of the album, is a very slow, jazz/R&B track, with lazy vocals and luminous relaxing energy. "I Can't Write Left Handed" is a track traveling down memory lane, visiting old Black America and the transitions that were faced after the Vietnam War. John Legend narrates while the old music, lead by the piano, inspires his tone. "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" is also a spoken word track accompanied by the classic "Roots" sounds; slow and jazzy, then later fades into "Shine," a religious inspired melody coated with the voice of John Legend and his fabulously seasoned piano skills. "Shine" again appears in a different version, more classic of John's older songs such as "Ordinary People" (The Roots let him go solo on this track), with light piano rifts and powerful voice. The album comes to an end with a live rendition of "Wake Up Everybody," reminding us of the focus of the collaboration. Overall, this is a particularly political album, rising against racism, social classes and poverty in our society. The Roots and John Legend promote their content with sounds we love, lyrics we respect and magic we've longed for.

Nivea Covers Sade?

Okay people, no one needs to cover Sade...rather no one should. Let's be serious, although Nivea does make an attempt to cover Sade's classic track, "Stronger Than Pride," she really shouldn't have bothered. Sade is an icon...let's make new music, shall we? Let's come out with something NEW! Especially, when Nivea has been gone as long as she has, she needs to come out with something fresh to grab our attention. We've already heard Sade, and only she should be singing her music. She's one of a kind Nivea...don't waste your time covering a classic, especially for a mixtape! Allegedly, she has a mixtape coming out, but hopefully we won't be disappointed. I'm crossing my fingers that its not a bunch of covers.

Rihanna is the Only Girl

Rihanna is back with her infectious beats, and intoxicating voice. She lifts you off the ground at the club as her music sounds like its from another place. I thought I was tired of the electro-trendy music that we hear seemingly too often, but apparently I'm not. Rihanna continues to smash the radio. She knows what we like and she delivers!

Lauryn Hill and Ron Isley Cover!

This beautiful rendition of Burt Bacharach's song, "They Long to Be Close To You," brings grace and elegance to music once again. Lauryn brings her classic and extremely missed voice to the track with beautiful harmonies with Ron Isley. The piano lead melody has the sweet old soul sound that we've longed for and is strictly for lovers. Although, both artists have been missing from the scene for many years, they reappear and reassure us that they still have talent and can come back whenever they like. This track is said to be on Ron Isley's new album coming soon.

Keri Hilson's New Track "Still A Girl"

Second to her first single "Breaking Point" produced by Timbaland is another unreleased new track "Still A Girl." Its a soft track about how women really feel in relationships. We're still girls. The track has got Keri's "popish" style and brings a certain grace to the song. Her songwriting skills are shining again. Although, this single might not be single-ready, it does provide a good transitional space for Miss Keri. Her album is out this fall!
